It was early evening by the time we reached the Point Villas on Lake Taupo after a long but enjoyable drive up from Wellington and waiting to meet us were the villa owners, Peg & Brian. Many travel here for the sailing, adventure activities or trout fishing, but in our case we just wanted to relax and the warmth of our welcome suggested we had made exactly the right choice – it felt great.
Luxurious, peaceful, relaxing, romantic and scenic are just some of the words I would use to describe this amazing ‘little gem’ overlooking the impressive Lake Taupo on the North Island of New Zealand.
The unique location is a big attraction, far enough away to make you feel you’re the only people for miles around, even though you can pop into Lake Taupo’s town centre in under 15 minutes where there is no shortage of good restaurants, adventure activity companies and shops to visit.
There's no in-house restaurant but Peg offers what she calls ‘flexible dining and catering options’ something unique for this level of accommodation. Some guests pre-order the ingredients of their chosen meal and then cook for themselves, but we decided to splash out on our second night and have the award winning chef, Prue Campbell, cook us a gourmet meal in our villa. What a great decision that turned out to be!
In the background the kitchen was a hive of activity, but we were more interested in watching the sunset over the lake and enjoying a pre-dinner drink with delicious homemade canapés. The whole experience was definitely one of the highlights of our stay!
The luxurious yet cosy design of the Point Villas are high by anyone’s standards with astonishing views overlooking Lake Taupo. The bathrooms have views of the surrounding rain forest whilst the interiors are spacious, beautifully decorated and incredibly comfortable.
It’s clear that Peg’s vision of keeping the property in harmony with the surrounding environment has been a masterstroke. The architectural design of the property blends in seamlessly with the spectacular scenery whether you are on the deck, having a quick dip in the pool, relaxing on the couches or soaking in the wonderfully designed bathtub.
Coming from a relatively big city, we appreciated those small things that make trip like ours so enjoyable! Peg and Brian’s attention to detail and their thoughtful little touches and tactfulness when it came to balancing hospitality and privacy were exceptional. We particularly enjoyed some of our more off beat conversations as Peg and Brian are both worldly and interesting people.
We appreciated what a wonderful little oasis this place was and why our friends had spoken so highly of it. We felt both spoiled and rejuvenated after an amazing time and we didn’t even mind having to travel back to Wellington, comforting ourselves with the thought that we’d most definitely be back. Until next time….
