When the 93 mile Otago rail line was closed in 1990 and the steel tracks removed it was decided to convert it into a path for walkers and cyclists. The resulting Rail Trail has proven to be hugely popular with overseas visitors. There are no steep hills to conquer, and for the complete experience allow 3-5 days to complete the trail. It passes through with small towns offering good food and accommodation, gentle hills, tussock grasslands, gorges and wonderful mountain scenery.
