The Whirinaki Forest

Visitors from the US are discovering a beautiful forest called Whirinaki (fear-uh-knack-ee) situated in the North Island. This is one of the world's last accessible prehistoric rainforests and revered by the Maori people of New Zealand as a place of great spiritual importance.

This is pristine forest at its finest, a true wilderness, massive in size (over 200 square miles) with large tracts virtually un-touched by any human activities. 1 Day or 3 day escorted tours from Rotorua, into the depths of the Whirinaki Forest with local guides Te Urewera Treks are included in all of our itineraries. One example that includes the Whirinaki option is the 15 day "North Island & Southern Alpine Wonders" But we'll let our 'Images of the Day' do the rest of the talking.
